Credit Update: This program has been approved for 1.5 hours of CLE credit in Kansas, including 1.0 hour of Ethics, and 1.6 hours of CLE credit in Missouri, including 1.1 hours of Ethics. The Kansas City Municipal Court CARE Court Program is a collaborative, problem-solving court model designed to address the complex challenges that often accompany homelessness, behavioral health needs, substance use disorders, poverty, and repeated justice system involvement. This program will explore how CARE Court creates meaningful accountability while connecting participants to treatment, housing, supportive services, and long-term stability.
Through perspectives from Barbie Miller and Josh Henges of the City of Kansas City's Office of the Unhoused, Tierney Clement of the Kansas City Municipal Court, City Prosecutor Elizabeth Hurley, Warren Hayter of Legal Aid of Western Missouri, and Judge Martina Peterson of the Kansas City Municipal Court, attendees will examine the ethical and professional responsibility issues that arise when legal and social service systems work together to support participants.
Topics will include attorney-client privilege, confidentiality, due process, professional responsibility obligations, judicial ethics, information sharing, and the practical challenges of navigating collaborative court environments while maintaining compliance with the Rules of Professional Conduct.
